Pygmy nymphos

The pygmy nymphos (which were roughly the size of your index finger) used to populate the earth's primordial forests, living in large social clusters.
They were the original pollinators, drinking the sweet nectar of the flowers in exchange for spreading their seeds and pollen.
They began inter breeding with the (then) earthbound insects, who, over the years, developed wings similar to the nymphos' as well as gaining other characteristics from them i.e.: fireflies have glow tails, bees pollinate, etc.
every now and then, a pygmy nymphos of purer heritage will show up, but the closest your average person will come to seeing one will probably only be the insects that contain their diluted blood.
